The Department of Animal Health and Production is one of the three departments that make the School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS).

The Department offers training programs in BSc. Animal Health and Production (BAH), BSc Agriculture and Rural Development (BARD), BSc Animal Science (BAS), Diploma in Animal health and Production (DAH), Certificate in Animal Health and Production (CAH) as well as short course leading to Certificate in Artificial Insemination (CAI).

The Department is based at Thika Campus with Nakuru Campus as satellite where Diploma and Certificate courses in Animal Health and Production are also offered. BAH, DAH, CAH and CAI are regulated by Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB).

The Department has received students on the KUCCPS admission program which attests to the approval ratings of the courses in animal sciences. Additional to own developed programs, the Departments services courses related to animals and agriculture for the School of Education, Public Health and Medical Laboratory Sciences.

The Department aspires to make a footing in the farming community in the surrounding areas of MKU with community services targeting animal welfare, and health and productivity asa participant in exhibitions and mounting such celebrations as World Rabies Day (September) and World Veterinary Day (April)

The department is committed to producing high level professionals that are ready for the market, and who are equipped with all the necessary skills such as research, innovation and ability to adapt themselves to rapidly changing demands in the fields of Agriculture and Animal Health and production.
